Hello dear friends, family, neighbors, acquaintances, et al,
I don't know how to begin writing this. So let's just get out the facts first.
I would like you to join me in donating to the No on 8 campaign.
I will match your donation, up to $2,000.00.
I looked at my credit card, my student loans, my bank acct, (I'm shunning the 401k for a while). I decided that I wanted to donate but I couldn't decide how much was enough. $2,000 is the very most I can give. I've already given to them twice, and I know they need to buy the airtime to get the word out about voting NO on 8.
I figured, "enough" would be the amount all my friends/family/acquaintances etc would be willing to give as well. We could collectively raise 4 grand or more, and that would be remarkable.
I don't know how to express the importance of this vote. They will enshrine discrimination into the Constitution of California if Proposition 8 passes. This has happened to too many states in the US already, and we can't let California slip by.
Some History...
Interracial couples couldn't marry after the an arrest in 1881 led to Court Rulings enshrining racism in 1883. It took 84 years before this racist law was overturned in Loving vs Virginia in 1967.
I'm reminded of Plessy vs Ferguson - the Supreme Court Ruling that made "Separate but Equal" the law of the land in 1896. It took 58 years for that ruling to be overturned by Brown vs Board of Education in 1954.
When the courts of California, and just today, Connecticut, ruled in favor of gay marriage, they sited how 'separate but equal' civil unions are discriminatory. If equality is to exist, it must be made for everyone. Different rules shouldn't have applied back then, and they shouldn't apply now.
The Defense of Marriage Act in 1996 was a piece of Legislature that prevents the Federal Govt from recognizing same sex marriages. This is unconstitutional at its core.
How long will it be before the LGBT community is treated equally? I'd say Stonewall (1969) is a good starting point, so it's been 39 years already.
How much longer will it take? another 10 years? 20? Will I or my friends live to see the day?
Sorry for the rambling. If you believe like I do, that people have an inherent right to equality, please consider making a donation. $5 becomes $10, or $20 becomes $40, which eventually becomes $4000 or more. It's like a pyramid scheme for love and equality!
Go here to donate online - but this is the important part - in order for me to know if you've donated, you must leave a comment with how much you gave. It can be anonymous and that's fine, I just won't have any other way of knowing how much ya'll donate otherwise.
This drive will end Wednesday of next week (when I get paid.) Below are some videos you can check out that have inspired this in part...
love
C
